The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry | Silence + Solitude | Week 3

What was the last question God asked you?

We spend plenty of time bringing our questions to God. Why is this happening? What should I do? Where are you in this? But sometimes the questions that transform us most aren’t the ones we ask God—they’re the ones God asks us.

In Mark 8, after a conversation with his disciples, Jesus asks a piercing question: “Don’t you understand yet?”

It would be easy to hear those words as an accusation. But what if they’re actually an invitation?

That’s where the practice of silence and solitude becomes so important.

Jesus regularly stepped away from the noise. Before beginning his public ministry, he spent forty days in the wilderness. Later, in the middle of a demanding season of ministry, he got up before sunrise and went somewhere alone to pray. Even before the cross, Jesus withdrew to be with his Father. We need that same kind of space.

Our lives are filled with noise, responsibilities, screens, conversations, worries, and ambitions. Often, we don’t recognize what’s happening inside us until pressure forces it out. Silence and solitude give us room to notice what’s there before it shapes us in unhealthy ways.

So try something simple: find a peaceful place, put away your phone, and bring only a journal and pen. Write down whatever begins to surface. Don’t rush it. Pay attention. Ask what questions God might be bringing to your heart, and be willing to admit where you need him.

You may not walk away understanding everything.

But perhaps the goal isn’t having all the answers. Perhaps it’s becoming quiet enough to hear the gentle voice of the One who does.

What is keeping you from silence before God?
