The big idea for this sermon was: Jesus wants to transform hearts, not merely correct outward behavior. When Jesus says he has come to “fulfill the Law and the Prophets” (the Scriptures of his day), he means bringing those commandments to their full, heart-centered meaning rather than abolishing them.
The 10 Commandments and other laws and commands in the Old Testament are often simple rules, like the ones we sometimes give our kids such as “play nice”, and yet they gain nuance and depth as we learn how they express love and flourishing.
We need to ask follow-up questions such as “What counts as work on the Sabbath?” or “Are there limits to honoring parents when they’ve harmed us?” show that the law points to an underlying intention, not only to external compliance.
The problem Jesus addresses is legalism: religious leaders layered countless rigid regulations so tightly that the original purpose of the law—rest, relationship, and justice—was obscured. Jesus calls for a righteousness that surpasses mere external conformity; true obedience flows from transformed motives, desires, and affections.
