The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry | Week 5

We live in a culture that is constantly pulling us toward the next thing: the next notification, the next episode, the next task, the next scroll. Even when our bodies stop moving, our souls can remain restless.
That’s why hurry may be a bigger spiritual problem than we realize.
Psalm 131 gives us a beautiful picture of another way to live:
“But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.”
A weaned child has learned that comfort and satisfaction don’t always have to come immediately. And maybe some of us need that same kind of weaning.
When we feel bored, anxious, lonely, or uncomfortable, we often reach instinctively for something that promises quick relief. We scroll. We shop. We work. We watch. We keep moving. Those things may distract us for a moment, but they rarely satisfy the deeper desires underneath our restlessness.
Following Jesus sometimes means intentionally cutting off the things that continually pull us back into hurry. Maybe that means deleting an app, turning off notifications, changing a routine, or beginning and ending the day with prayer instead of a screen.
Because saying “no” to hurry means saying “yes” to slowing down.
And as we practice Sabbath, silence, solitude, simplicity, and slowing, something begins to change. We discover that the life we were frantically searching for was never found in moving faster.
It is found in God.
So consider this question today: What most pulls you into the vortex of hurry?
Perhaps Jesus is inviting you to release it—and learn again how to calm and quiet your soul.
